The first thing to be done by a book reviewer (student) is to depict the content. One of the most essential things is discuss the book content and supply analysis of what a student had read. Othello

Othello is portrayed as a passionate and noble hero. He is represented as of honest character and holds a high rank as general in the Venician Army. Although Othello is depicted as a great man, he is also treated as an outsider because of the fact that he is a Moor. The union between Othello and Desdemona is not rendered as wrong to the audience, but shown as being torn apart by the Elizabethan society in 1604. For Shakespeare to give Othello such characteristics, put him at such a high position, and at the same time show how differently he is treated because of the color of his skin, Shakespeare writes a play about racism--not a racist play.

Brabantio and Othello had a good relationship until Iago got between them informing Brabantio of the marriage between Othello and Brabantio's daughter, Desdemona. "Even now, very now, and old black ram is tupping your white ewe. Arise, arise: Awake the snorting citizens with the bell, or else the devil will make a grandsire of you," this was Iago's first attempt to turn Brabantio against Othello (I, i, 88-91). Brabantio is the father of Desdemona, and also the one who appointed Othello as general. When referring to Othello as the General of the Venician Army Brabantio has great respect for Othello. When it comes to the marriage between Desdemona and Othello Brabantio refers to it as "against all rules of nature," yet before Brabantio found out about the marriage Othello tells the Senate about how Brabantio "Еlov'd me, oft invited me; still question'd me the story of my life," (I, iii, 101-129). This shows that Othello's race was not an issue before the marriage, Othello tells the Senate he was often invited to Brabantio's house and there was respect between them.
There is hatred towards Othello from Brabantio because of the marriage that takes place between Desdemona and Othello behind his back. Othello, being a Moor comes out as a big issue, but the fact that Desdemona lied to her father is also a big part of the reason for the hatred Brabantio has towards Othello. Brabantio admits "if she confess that she was half the wooer, destruction on my head, if my bad blame light on the man," (I, iii, 175-176). He finds it unbelievable that Desdemona fell in love with Othello on her own, or was part of the courtship. Brabantio even accused Othello of using magic spells or tricks on Desdemona stating that, "she is abused, stol'n from me, and corrupted by spells and medicines bought of mountebanks; for nature so preposterously to err, being not deficient, blind, or lame of sense, sans witchcraft could not, (I, iii, 60-64).

This play has many racist comments coming from its main characters, but the comments are not made because of the color of Othello's skin, they are made only as a way to attack Othello for other reasons. The characters do not actually have something against Othello because he is a Moor; they have hatred towards Othello for other reasons, and use the color of his skin to strike against him. Iago comes across as the most racist character in the entire play, not only does he act racist towards Othello, but he tries to get the other characters to turn against Othello as well. Iago makes several racist remarks about Othello, but he makes these remarks behind his back because he doesn't Othello to know, since he is in a higher position than him. He doesn't have hatred towards Othello because he is black; his hatred is because Othello didn't give him the promotion that Iago believes he deserved and because he suspects that Othello slept with his wife. Othello chose Cassio, who has no experience in the army, to be his lieutenant. Another character that makes some racist comments is Roderigo, but he also does not carry his hatred towards Othello because of his skin color, but mainly because Desdemona is married to someone else, when he had asked for her hand. Emilia also makes a racist remark, saying "O, the more angel she, and you the black devil," but this is the only time during the play that she comments on his color, and this is out of anger, right after Othello kills Desdemona (V, i, 130-131).

Shakespeare does not use Othello's race to portray black people of lesser value. In fact, the Duke even says to Senator Brabantio, "Your son-in-law is far more fair than black," showing that Othello's positive characteristics are far more important than his skin color (I, iii, 287). Othello may be a minority, but he holds a high place in society. By Othello being black he is more obviously shown as an outsider, without this element the play would lose most of its meaning and value. The outsider quality explains some of his insecurities, which cause his jealous behavior and lead to his downfall. Iago put suspicions in his head about Desdemona having an affair, and OthelloТs already showed that he doubted that Desdemona truly loved him.

This play deals with love, jealousy, and racism. It is not written to make blacks look bad, but fixes on the complications that they must deals with, especially so long ago in an Elizabethan society. Shakespeare shows Othello and Desdemona's love being torn apart by outside sources. The marriage is not depicted as wrong to the audience, but shows that the relationship had to forgo the racist community that surrounded it. Othello is already presented as an outsider because of his color, and by other characters, trying to break apart the relationship for one reason or the other, fixing on his insecurities it all builds up to cause the tragic ending that takes place.

Hamlet is Not Mad

Hamlet does not have a natural inclination for pretense and dissimulation, rather he develops into a human being that needs pretense to survive. This becomes evident throughout the play, when analysing Hamlets altering ego's and behaviour. It would be a reasonable argument to say he develops a split personality. Hamlet changes from a normal, well-liked man in Act 1, to a man using "madness" as an excuse for his flagrant cowardice in Act 111. The final transition into derangement occurs early in the 1V act, when he refers to himself in the third person. Hamlet is a man that uses this feigned madness originally as a justification for his repeated cowardice.

When analysing Hamlet during Act 1, it is notable that he is normal, confident and outgoing, while talking with Horatio regarding the ghost. However, after he sees the apparition for himself, Hamlet seems slightly over persistent, ensuring Marcellus and Horatio promise their silence about their knowledge of accurances regarding what they have just witnessed. This shows that Hamlet is a very intelligent and aware man. His keeping his friends silent, provides him with a way to plan his revenge for Claudius without him having even the slightest idea - providing surprise.

These are all things that suggest Hamlet was in control of his mind state, and although different, sane at this stage in the play.

Act 11 is a crucial part of the development of Hamlet's madness, as he, for the first time, begins his retaliative plans for Claudius. He lays the foundations for these plans by coming to Ophelia 'with his doublet all unbraced' and essentially acting like a stranger. It is vital to note that two months have passed between Act 1 and Act 11, because it is clear that Hamlet has been 'normal' throughout this preceding time period. This is why Ophelia is so shocked by Hamlets behaviour, and consults her father Polonius in tears. Polonius incorrectly believes that Hamlet is crazy for Ophelias love, and seeks out the king to inform him of what he has learnt. This shows that Polonius also finds this behaviour to be odd, proving Hamlet has changed or acted out of place - not normally.

If Hamlet had in fact been acting normally, then it would be fair to say that he is a natural 'madman' or faker, but he was not. He was enforcing his cunning plan, and it would appear he has created the confusion and controversy he was looking for.

Hamlet continues to dazzle when talking with Polonius during Act 11, sc 11, confirming Polonius' prediction in just one quick conversation. This is absorbing, as Polonius, although sporting a pre-disposed theory on Hamlet's intriguing state of mind, is surprised at what he sees. This is evidence, once again, that Hamlet has not always been like this. There is not even the slightest hint to show he was ever a faker.
One can only assume Hamlet has firstly, control of his mind set, and secondly, that he has used this change of personality as a vital role in his devious scheme for his fathers revenge.

During Act11, sc11, Hamlet shows his intelligent apprehension for seizing opportunities to test the truth of the Ghosts words. He detains an actor, requesting that he perform a play with a few of his own inserted lines. He does this so he can judge whether or not his feigned madness is required any longer. This is a clear sign that Hamlet is in fact only 'performing' as a deranged man, hence he is aware and in charge of his psychological status. These occurrences also confirm that Hamlet is an amazingly well educated and aware man.

In Hamlets second soliloquy (Act11, Sc11 - L:525) he basically questions himself, asking if he is a 'coward'. He goes on to find himself speaking of Claudius and how he plans to 'catch his conscience'. This soliloquy is important as it shows Hamlet is beginning to form an obsession with retaliation and revenge for his fathers murder. It is the start of Hamlets inability to transform at his own will from 'sane' to 'insane'. It would appear as though his selfish comments regarding his mind being too weak to cope with the pressure, have ironically been confirmed.

An interesting thing happens during Act 111, sc 11, that gives the impression Hamlets 'sane personality' can be ruthlessly cruel to others in order to gain what he desires.
In this scene, Hamlet appears to be 'back in love' with Ophelia, flirting with her after he rejected her advances. Unfortunately for Ophelia this sends her over the edge - all because it aided Hamlet in creating a sense of bamboozling behavior. This aids Hamlet, because he destroys ant theory Claudus or Polonius had for his unknown madness.
This scene occurs at the opening of Hamlets adaptatious play, with Hamlet appearing to be excited and eager to witness Claudius' reaction. Hamlet, in a jestive yet educated manner, commentates the occurrences on the stage to Ophelia. It seems as though Hamlet is not concentrating but is surprisingly aware of what is going on. This suggests that he is in a balanced state of sanity and insanity at this integral part of his developing personality.

After Claudius reacts to the trap set by Hamlet (Act111, sc11). Horatio and Hamlet hold counsel regarding what they have witnessed. Hamlet is excited and in definate control of his mental decisions. However, Hamlet rapidly transforms into an inquisitive and hostile manner to his good friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern.

It should be noted that at this point, Hamlet realises he has slipped into his deranged mind set, and adjusts accordingly. Ironically, only moments later, he is accusing his friends once more. These events show that Hamlet has almost lost entire control of his different personalities. It becomes evident that Hamlet uses his madness as an excuse for his cowardice after Claudius' soliloquy during Act 111 Sc 111. Hamlet sees Claudius praying, providing a golden opportunity to commit his revenge, but denies it due to Claudius' apparent vulnerable state. This indicates that Hamlet is inconsistent with his courage, letting pusillanimity take over the control instead, when action needs to be done. Hamlet creates a poor excuse in madness, which evidently is a reason for his eventual sustained insanity.

A very obvious argument follows up the play, with Hamlet exploding at his mother Gertrude. (Act 111 sc 1V) He confronts his inner conflict in the process, and with a murderous twist kills a spying Polonius. After realizing it was in fact Polonius he has killed, Hamlet shows no sign of repentance, passing it off as something 'the everlasting' wanted. Throughout this conversation Hamlet slips in and out of his personalities, finally leaving in his
'sane' mind set. Amazingly enough, Hamlet goes on to continue his cunning, if somewhat mysterious plan. He tells Gertrude to play along with his act, proving Polonius was correct in saying Hamlet has method in his madness.

Gertrude succumbs to Hamlets wishes (Act 1V sc 1) playing along with his act to Claudius. She describes Hamlet as being 'Mad as the sea and wind' to a sympathetic if somewhat disturbed Claudius. This favour completed by Gertrude, shows that she must believe that Hamlet is not a natural faker, because if Gertrude can tell he is not acting in a pretense manner, then surely he is not a natural faker.

Hamlet takes the final step into insanity and derangement when, during Act 1V sc 11, he refers to himself in a third person. Hamlet says; 'What noise? who calls on Hamlet ?' regarding the arrival of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Killing Polonius was the final step for Hamlet. Madness, fear and adrenalin take over any resistance offered by the normal, or sane part of Hamlet. He no longer has the ability to change between 'mad' and 'normal' - he is now a madman.

In conclusion, Hamlet is not a natural faker, but a cowardly man, so intelligent that madness was the only way he could evade the pressure he believed he was under. His slow evolvement into madness originally was a sophisticated way of gaining revenge for his fathers death, and as an excuse for his cowardice. His personal characteristics also changed, going from a well liked confident, outgoing scholar, to being disliked and paranoid. He is an insidious actor and uses this to his advantage by creating a sense of puzzlement and confusion in Claudius' head.

'Do not pull an ugly face, for if the wind changes, you will stay like that for ever.' This old saying is relevant to Hamlet's growth, as the wind changed whilst he was acting out his feigned madness.

Romeo and Juliet

“In fair Verona where we lay our scene,” a young lover sits alone preoccupied with endless thoughts of his unrequited love. He puffs his cigarette and squints up at the clouds as if doing so would pass the long, sad hours. He isolates himself in his own world of infatuation, and is “Under love’s heavy burden,” as he puts it. In his surroundings he is an enemy waiting to be hunted by Capulets and by fate. This is Romeo Montague, age fourteen, confused, romantic figure, destined for true love, hated by Capulets, and fated to die.

The new setting of an ancient play put into modern times is really what makes Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet so interesting. This contemporary version of the film allows people of today relate to the times of yesterday, and relate to Romeo’s character more effectively. The scenery of Romeo and Juliet is used very favorably to explain Romeo and his behaviors. The first seen shows the towers of Montague and Capulet, with the church of God between the “The two households, alike in dignity”. The only three things that both these families have in common is the love they have for themselves as a family, the hatred they have for one another, and their faith in God. This scene foreshadows the whole movie, and how love and religion comes between two families of hate. The scenery seems to change with every mood of each event. The first scene Romeo is in, he sits by himself on a very desolate beach. This scenery sets the mood of Romeo. He is a very confused young man, who longs for love with a girl named Rosaline. When Romeo’s parents pull up in the car where he sits, he turns away from them. Romeo is seen off in the distance from his parent’s eyes. This explains how Romeo is shutting his family out, and he is trying to cope with things on his own. Later on in the movie, when Romeo attends Capulet’s feast, the party scenery is very happy and celebrative. Romeo, on the other hand, is miserable. This scenery foreshadows the love he is about to meet, the fair Juliet. After this, the scenery changes to the pool below Juliet’s room. The scenery is very beautiful and it glows just like Romeo’s face when he sees his Juliet. The darkness gives the two more privacy from the world around them, and also gives the scene an intimate touch. Romeo risks his life to see her once again that very night by climbing the walls of the Capulet’s house. Next, when the two are to be married, the church is empty, except for a choir. This can be explained by the civil conflicts the two families would have if they knew of the two lovers marriage. There is no one to celebrate their love with them, because their families would be highly against it. After the two are married and Tybalt challenges Romeo to a brawl, the scenery becomes very dark and windy, especially when Mercutio dies. Romeo rampages and goes after Tybalt and kills him. The ironic thing is, Romeo kills Tybalt right under a statue of Jesus. Romeo looks up at the statue and mimics Jesus by raising his hands. He then shouts, “I am forgiven!” The whole scene shows how God was already there to forgive Romeo for the death of Tybalt. The quick action and dark scenery is used to show Romeo’s rage to kill. Last, the most tragic and compelling scene would have to be the final scene of the movie. The scene of the young lovers suicides shows how the two feel the only way to preserve their love is to take their lives.
Many influential people in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet dictate Romeos’ character. Romeo is seen as a frustrated young man who cannot have a woman he is falsely in love with. The Montague gang persists on him finding new interest, but Rosaline’s denial of Romeo’s love, reflects a great deal on him. He finds happiness in nothing, and he is very depressed because of Rosaline. Romeo takes the love drug (ecstasy) given to him by Mercutio as to ease the pain before they attend Capulet’s feast.

Mercutio is another effective character on Romeo. Mercutio is a playful character in this movie and is always criticizing the people around him, including Romeo and his youthful need to be loved. First off, Mercutio talks Romeo into attending Capulet’s feast. Romeo was not interested and found more pleasure in grieving over Rosaline. If it had not been for Mercutios' persistence on Romeo, Romeo would have never met Juliet. Another reason Mercutio was an effective character to Romeo was when he died. Mercutio steps in to beat down Tybalt during Romeo and Tybalt’s brawl, and ends up getting killed. If Mercutio would have never allowed himself to get involved, Romeo would have never killed Tybalt, he never would have been banished, and he never would have killed himself in the mistaken event of his wife’s death. When Mercutio died he put the story out of fates hands and proclaimed that the two houses were responsible for his death, “A plague o' both your houses! They have made worms meat of me: I have it, And soundly too: your houses.”

Another strong reflection on Romeo is his last name, and his love Juliet. He is a Montague, enemy of the mighty Capulets. When he first sets eyes on Juliet he is emerged into love by her beauty, and is over Rosaline within the very moment he sees Juliet. Romeo then comes to find that she is a Capulet and “His life is his foe’s debt.” It once again puts a burden on his love, but this time Romeo stops at nothing to have Juliet, and even risks his life to see her once more that night. Juliet has a good effect on Romeo, and he becomes more of a man realizing the love the two have for one another. Juliet brings out Romeo’s shallow desire to be in love, to an intense passion. She also inspires him to be the man she needs him to be. For example, when he kisses her and she replies, “You kiss by the book.” She is implying that he lacks originality and shows how Romeo loves by the book. He matures over the course of the play, and the two create a deep passion with one another. Romeo is greatly affected by her love, and even accepts his enemy as his family by refusing to fight Juliet’s cousin Tybalt. This event causes Mercutio to die and many following events to cause the death of the two star-crossed lovers. Romeos’ character also affects Juliet. When Juliet meets Romeo it is her first full-force toward adulthood. She takes her only enemies name in marriage against her families will, and fakes her death so she can be with her love. Romeo’s romantic figure towards Juliet has her making on the spot decisions, like marriage on the their second date, and her taking her life because of her intense love she felt for Romeo.

Tybalt is an enemy that could have put the story Romeo and Juliet into a completely different conclusion. Tybalt raises a feud between Romeo and himself right after Romeo marries Tybalt’s cousin Juliet. Romeo’s knowledge of the connection they share causes him to restrain himself from fighting. He loves Juliet so much that he overthrows the hate between her family and his own. This shows how Romeo is a very noble man and that his love means more than his families ancient grudge. In doing this, his best friend Mercutio is killed. Mercutio’s death effects Romeo with such force that he kills his new cousin Tybalt in rage.
Friar Laurence is the sole figure of religion in this movie. He is affected by Romeo in the agreement to marry Juliet and himself. The only reason that the Friar agrees to marry the two is to end the civil strife between the two families. Friar Laurence is also an aid for Juliet by giving her sleeping potion when Romeo is banished; therefore, the two lovers could reunite. The priest is very influential and a helpful aid in advice, making it possible for the two to be together, but the Friar also brings fate upon Romeo and Juliet. If the priest had given Romeo the letter in time, Romeo would have never killed himself next to his sleeping Juliet.

Romeo’s clothing shows a big part of his personality as well. He is a very laid back person, and he is very settle, yet modern with his style. In the first scene he is dressed in a black suit as if he was going to a funeral. This explains the unhappiness he was feeling after the denial of his love to Rosaline. At the Capulet’s feast Romeo is dressed in a knight costume portraying his characteristics as a noble, handsome, courageous, daring, gentlemen. Juliet was dressed as an angel portraying her innocence as a young, sheltered woman. Romeo is always wearing a cross around his neck and a gun on his back. This explains that he fears no one, and keeps God above all.

The cinematography was very interesting in some of the scenes shown in the movie. In the beginning of the movie the producers distinctly made it clear to show who was a Montague and who was a Capulet by zooming in on their guns and license plates that had one of the names engraved on it. In the third civil brawl they made the camera very quick to change from person to person making it an intense scene. This was also the case in events leading up to Tybalt’s death, but when Romeo was shooting him and screaming the camera was slow motion. This was very effective in the way that you really looked into what he was doing not only to Tybalt but with his relationship with Juliet and himself. Once Romeo met Juliet the camera made every scene with them together seem very intimate with close shots on their faces. Also, when Romeo kills Tybalt, he looks up at the Jesus statue. The statue is shown from a shot looking up toward it, representing that no matter how much power is within the hand of man, he is the power. The most influential cinematography was at the end of the movie. After the two star-crossed lovers’ take their lives, their bodies are positioned next to one another forming a cross with the candles that surround them. The camera shot is directly above them, representing that they were now in God’s hands.

Was the story of Romeo and Juliet all based on fate? There could have been many outcomes of this beautiful love story. Had Romeo restrained himself from killing Tybalt, or even waited one more day before killing himself after hearing the news of Juliet’s death, situations might have happened differently. These extreme behaviors that Romeo did show and did act upon is what dominates him throughout the story. If Romeo did not have such depths of feeling, the love he shared with Juliet would never have existed in the first place. Romeo starts out as a young man entangled in superficial notions of love and progresses into a complex romantic relationship. Romeo ultimately fails in his efforts to live happily ever after with his “heart’s dear love” “For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”
