Racism Essay

Racism is a word that can be defined in many different ways to people. To some, racism is a way of life, and to others, it is a repulsive term that represents closed-mindedness. Racism comes from different cultural values, ethnic backgrounds, as well as the physical appearances. The conflict of racism occurs when the majority group of society feels that the different cultures and values of the minority group brings the deviance to the society. The United States of America, which brought people from all over the world, is stated as the land of opportunity and freedom, it is also the country that is notorious for the racial discrimination. From the beginning of this country, there were conflicts with the Indians, slavery of blacks, and going against the people who immigrated here hoping to achieve the American dream. Racism have been one of the most significant issues that people have been facing and fighting for, and is still occurring around us without even knowing.

I have not felt any serious racism against me so far since I am a ESL student and had only been here for such a short period of time. Although the society that I am living in now is like the melting pot of all different cultures, I was able to figure out during my stay at school that most people who were in the same color used to get along together. I also heard about the experience of racism that my uncle had, who immigrated here about 6 years ago. My uncle owns a store in the city of Tustin, which he often had to put up with racist customers. One of his experiences was when he was telling the total price of the customer’s total price. The customer was mocking my uncles pronunciation and made my uncle repeat himself over ten times even though the price was shown on the customers screen of the cashier. One other time that he felt racially discriminated against, was when the customer just threw the money at him, and when he did the same thing back, the person used profanity against his ethnic background. Not only did his experience ruin his day but it also made him to belittle himself for not being able to get the respect he wanted. Therefore, racism must be eliminated. I feel that no matter how different our appearances are, or different cultural values we have, it does not make up the reasons for the conflicts of racism. We should respect each other’s cultural values, and learn the good of it and make things peaceful. The different skin colors of black, brown, yellow or white only tells us the world that god created is made up of different people, with their own unique characteristics and values. We are all human beings, and this simple fact means that we are all equal.

Throughout the history, racism has been a major factor in many of the important events in our nations past. Racism can be defined as subjectivity in laws that deny individuals unalienable rights. It is something that was true against the blacks at the period of slavery and is still partly true. And we should not forget this tragic moment of our history and not let it renovate again. Blacks did not have the rights for free speech nor vote and many other laws that denied their unalienable rights. But through the determined wills of blacks to get their rights, eventually they had the rights to get freedom of speech and voting. But often the racist Ku Klux Klan threatened their lives. And some unintelligent laws were passed to prevent them from voting such as the grandfather clause (the law that said, in order to vote, their grandfather had to be the person who voted before), or they had to answer the questions that they would have never known, to vote. The blacks fought hard for their rights risking their lives and it made the United States of America the way it is today. We have the laws that protect our rights and freedom, free education to the poor no matter what their ethnicity is. I believe that the United States of America, which was the country that has undeniable history of racism, is becoming the country that brings the world without racism.

Racism kills and at the same time saves the people. It could kill them because it could discriminate them and hurt them in many ways. They could also be disadvantaged and become the victims of the society. But in another point of view, at the same time racism saves them, because through the discrimination, they become stronger and confirmed about themselves. They could also build the power and determine the will to overcome the barrier of racism and not become the victims of society but become part of it.

How would it feel like if you were walking around and saw people laughing at you, pointing at you or making fun of you? Racism is an irrational belief in the superiority of a given group, nation or people, usually ones own. Racism could occur even though other people do not care about how you look like, because one could be afraid of going near to them thinking that they are completely different and that they would make fun of you if you make any mistakes. Racism has declined currently, but is still an important factor we all should talk about. Although removing racism from our world would cause people a lot of sacrifices and suffering, I hope that we would be able to overcome all those incidents and live in a place where we do not care about an individual skin color or nationality.
